Graduate resumes: more than academic
Overview
In its 2001 survey, Graduate Outlook—which has surveyed recruitment trends in Australia and New Zealand annually since 2005— reported that employers ranked ‘interpersonal and communication skills’ as the most important selection criterion; which is consistent with rankings since the survey began. Numerous other studies have reached similar conclusions. This criterion remained the single most important selection criterion for all industries under examination, with manufacturing employers ranking ‘passion and knowledge’ as equally important.
Criteria were ranked as follows, with the top four remaining unchanged over the past three years.
- Interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written)
- Passion/knowledge of industry/drive/commitment/attitude
- Critical reasoning and analytical skills/problem solving/lateral thinking/technical skills
- Calibre of academic results
- Work experience
- Cultural alignment/values fit
- Teamwork skills
- Emotional intelligence (self awareness, strength of character, confidence, motivation
- Leadership skills
- Activities (intra and extra curricular)
