Ce dernier mot énigmatique attise la curiosité de la presse. Le journaliste Thompson est chargé de percer le mystère et va rencontrer tous ceux qui l'ont connu. Ces rencontres au présent où l'on plonge dans ses souvenirs sont accompagnées à chaque fois de flashbacks qui lèvent toujours un peu plus le voile sur sa vie.
Tout jeune, il a dû quitter sa mère, qui se trouvait par hasard héritière d’une mine d’or, pour être élevé par un financier dans la perspective de sa fortune à venir. Devenu un grand magnat de la presse, il épouse la nièce du président des États-Unis et espère faire une carrière politique, carrière qui s'interrompt lorsque l'on apprend qu'il trompe sa femme avec Susan, une pseudo-cantatrice.
