What Is Shot Blasting?

Shot blasting is a mechanical surface treatment process in which metallic or other suitable abrasive media are propelled against a component at controlled or production-oriented speeds.

The primary objective is to remove unwanted material from the surface. Depending on the application, shot blasting can remove:

• Mill scale

• Rust and corrosion

• Foundry sand

• Paint and coatings

• Oxides

• Burrs and surface contaminants

Shot blasting can also create a suitable surface profile for subsequent painting, coating, welding, or other manufacturing operations.

Industrial shot blasting machines are available in several configurations, including tumble belt machines, hanger-type machines, spinner hanger machines, continuous systems, roller conveyor machines, table-type machines, and custom automated blasting systems.

The machine configuration is selected according to component size, weight, geometry, production volume, and required surface coverage.

What Is Shot Peening?

Shot peening is a controlled mechanical treatment used primarily to improve the fatigue resistance and service performance of components.

During shot peening, small spherical media are propelled against a component surface under controlled conditions. Each impact creates a small indentation and produces localized plastic deformation. This process generates beneficial compressive residual stress near the surface.

The controlled compressive stress can help components resist fatigue crack initiation and propagation under suitable operating conditions.

Shot peening is commonly used for demanding components in industries such as:

• Aerospace

• Automotive

• Defense

• Power generation

• Heavy engineering

• Oil and gas

• Industrial machinery

Applications can include gears, shafts, springs, connecting rods, turbine components, landing gear components, and other fatigue-critical parts.

Unlike conventional blasting, shot peening requires close control of process parameters and verification of the resulting treatment.

Shot Blasting vs Shot Peening: Main Difference

The simplest distinction is surface preparation versus engineered surface strengthening.

Difference in Machine Design

Although the basic principle of propelling media is similar, the equipment used for shot blasting and shot peening can be significantly different.

A shot blasting machine is normally designed for efficient and economical surface treatment. Production rate, coverage, media recovery, component handling, and ease of maintenance are major considerations.

A shot peening machine, particularly for aerospace and other critical applications, is designed around process repeatability and precise control. Media flow, air pressure, nozzle positioning, shot size, exposure time, component movement, intensity, and coverage may all need to be controlled and documented.

For complex components, automated or robotic shot peening systems can provide controlled movement of the component and blasting nozzle to achieve the required coverage.

Shot Blasting Equipment Applications

Shot blasting equipment is widely used where a component requires cleaning or surface preparation before another manufacturing or finishing operation.

Common applications include:

Foundries: Removal of sand, scale, and casting residues.

Steel fabrication: Removal of mill scale and surface contaminants before coating.

Automotive manufacturing: Cleaning and finishing of castings, forgings, and fabricated components.

Heavy engineering: Surface preparation of large fabricated and machined components.

Railway manufacturing: Treatment of wheels, components, and structural parts.

General manufacturing: Cleaning, deburring, and preparation of components for painting or coating.

The appropriate machine depends on component geometry and production requirements. For example, hanger machines can handle relatively large components, while tumble belt systems can process batches of smaller components.

Shot Peening Equipment Applications

Shot peening equipment is selected when controlled surface treatment is required to improve component fatigue performance.

Aerospace is one of the major application areas because aircraft components can experience repeated cyclic loading throughout their service life.

Shot peening may be applied to:

• Aircraft structural components

• Landing gear components

• Aero-engine components

• Turbine parts

• Gears and shafts

• Springs

• Automotive drivetrain components

• Critical mechanical components

For aerospace applications, equipment may incorporate programmable controls, automated nozzle movement, component rotation, recipe management, process monitoring, and documentation capabilities.

Robotic shot peening systems can be particularly useful for components with complex geometries where controlled access and repeatable coverage are required.

Why Process Control Matters in Shot Peening

One of the most important differences between blasting and peening is the level of process control.

Shot blasting generally focuses on achieving the required cleaning or surface preparation result efficiently.

Shot peening must achieve a defined treatment condition. Depending on the specification and application, parameters can include:

• Shot size

• Shot material

• Shot velocity

• Air pressure

• Media flow

• Nozzle distance

• Nozzle angle

• Exposure time

• Coverage

• Peening intensity

For controlled peening applications, Almen intensity is commonly used as an important process-control measurement. Coverage and media condition can also be monitored according to the applicable specification and process requirements.

This makes shot peening equipment more specialized than conventional production blasting equipment.

How to Choose Between Shot Blasting and Shot Peening

The correct machine should be selected according to the intended engineering result rather than simply the appearance of the treated surface.

Choose shot blasting equipment when the primary requirement is:

• Removing rust or scale

• Cleaning castings and forgings

• Removing foundry sand

• Preparing surfaces for coating

• Creating a surface profile

• General industrial surface preparation

Choose shot peening equipment when the primary requirement is:

• Controlled fatigue-life improvement

• Introduction of compressive residual stress

• Treatment of fatigue-critical components

• Aerospace or defense component processing

• Controlled and repeatable peening intensity

• Automated or robotic treatment of complex components

In some manufacturing facilities, both technologies may be used at different stages of production.

Shot Blasting and Shot Peening Machine Manufacturer

Selecting the right equipment manufacturer is important because machine configuration should match the component, production requirements, process specifications, and desired level of automation.

A manufacturer can evaluate factors such as component dimensions, material, batch size, surface condition, required coverage, media type, production cycle time, and applicable process requirements before recommending an equipment configuration.

For specialized applications, custom-designed systems can integrate component handling, blasting or peening systems, automation, process monitoring, media recovery, and safety systems.

Final Thoughts

Shot blasting and shot peening may look similar because both use high-velocity media impacts, but they serve different engineering purposes.

Shot blasting machines are primarily designed for cleaning, descaling, surface preparation, deburring, and finishing. Shot peening machines are designed for controlled mechanical treatment where improving fatigue performance through induced compressive residual stress is the objective.

Understanding this difference is essential when selecting industrial surface treatment equipment. The correct machine depends on the component, process objective, production requirements, required automation, and applicable industry specifications.

For manufacturers handling automotive, aerospace, foundry, railway, heavy engineering, or other industrial components, selecting the appropriate shot blasting or shot peening system can help achieve consistent processing and reliable production results.
