Trading in Path of Exile 2 is a core mechanic that can significantly boost your progression—especially if you're not playing on Solo Self-Found (SSF) servers. While many players spend time bartering with others for powerful gear or rare items, Path of Exile 2 offers a streamlined solution for POE currency handling fast-moving trade items like Orbs and Essences: the Currency Exchange.
In this guide, we'll walk you through how to unlock, access, and fully utilize the Currency Exchange system in Path of Exile 2, helping you trade more efficiently without needing direct player interaction.
What is the Currency Exchange?
The Currency Exchange is an in-game feature that allows you to trade common items and currencies (such as Chaos Orbs, Divine Orbs, and Essences) automatically through an NPC-based interface. This system functions similarly to an in-game trading post or marketplace, where you select what you want and what you’re offering in return, and the game finds a viable trade based on current player offers.
It’s ideal for players who want fast, anonymous, and efficient currency trading—no whispering other players, waiting for replies, or dealing with trade etiquette.
How to Unlock the Currency Exchange in Path of Exile 2
To gain access to the Currency Exchange, you’ll need to complete the first three Acts of the campaign. Once you’ve defeated Doryani and unlocked Cruel Difficulty, the Currency Exchange becomes available.
Here's which NPCs you’ll need to talk to, based on your progress:
Finn in Act 1
Risu in Act 2
Alva in Act 3
After reaching the endgame, the Currency Exchange remains accessible through these NPCs. However, for convenience, most players choose to place Alva in their Hideout, especially near Doryani, since both NPCs offer important features such as skill respecs, item identification, and now, the Currency Exchange.
How to Use the Currency Exchange
Using the Currency Exchange is straightforward once you understand the layout and logic behind it. Here’s a step-by-step guide:
1. Access the Currency Exchange
Speak to the relevant NPC (Finn, Risu, or Alva) depending on where you are in the game or who you've placed in your Hideout.
2. Choose What You Want
Under the “I Want” tab, select the item or currency you’re trying to acquire. This could be something common like Chaos Orbs, or something rarer like Divine Orbs.
3. Choose What You’re Offering
Under the “I Have” tab, select what you’re willing to trade. The system will automatically compare your selection against available player trade listings.
4. Evaluate Trade Ratios
If a match is found, you’ll see a ratio displayed—like 3:1, meaning three of your offered items are worth one of your desired item. Some trades may include decimal ratios (e.g., 1.68:1), in which case you may need to round up or trade in bulk to make the exchange happen.
Example:
If you want to trade Exalted Orbs for Divine Orbs, and the ratio is 3:1, you’ll need to offer 3 Exalted Orbs per Divine Orb.
If there are no matches, the window will show “0” or remain blank, indicating that no one is currently offering that trade.
5. Place Your Order
Once you’re satisfied with the trade ratio, select “Place Order” to confirm the transaction. The game will immediately execute the trade, and the new items will appear in the window for you to transfer to your inventory.
Important Notes and Tips
No Inventory Needed: You don’t have to keep the items you’re trading in your inventory. The system scans your stash, so just make sure your tradeable items are stored there.
Place Alva Wisely: Since you’ll use her frequently in the endgame, it’s a good idea to position Alva somewhere central in your Hideout—ideally beside Doryani.
Trade Efficiently: Don’t expect miracles with low-tier currencies. Trying to trade Orbs of Transmutation for Exalted Orbs usually won’t return results due to the massive value gap.
Bulk Trades Are Better: If you’re working with odd ratios (like 1.68:1), aim to cheap POE currency trade trade in bulk to avoid value losses due to rounding.
Check the Market Regularly: Ratios fluctuate based on player demand and supply. What might seem like a bad deal today could become optimal tomorrow.
Final Thoughts
The Currency Exchange in Path of Exile 2 is a welcome addition for players who prefer smooth, hassle-free trading. It takes out the stress of haggling and the waiting game that often comes with traditional player-to-player trades. Whether you're a seasoned player or just starting out, unlocking and mastering this system can save you time and enhance your efficiency as you climb toward PoE2’s endgame content.
So next time you’re swimming in Chaos Orbs or searching for that elusive Divine Orb, don’t forget—there’s a faster way to trade. Happy hunting, Exile.
