Minion builds feel properly alive in Path of Exile 2's Return of the Ancients update. Patch 0.5 didn't just give summoners more damage; it made the whole playstyle less clunky. Pets move better, scale harder, and survive longer, which means you're not always babysitting them through bad pathing or awkward boss phases. If you're sorting early gear, upgrading POE 2 Items for spirit, minion levels, and defensive stats can make these builds come online much sooner. The big winners are beast tamers, classic army witches, wasp users, and a few odd hybrid setups that don't play like old-school summoners at all.
The Zookeeper Spirit Walker is the build many players point to first, and it's easy to see why. You're not raising a few skeletons and hoping for the best. You're running with wolves, bears, clerics, rare beasts, and sometimes boss-style companions that bring their own nasty modifiers. Tame Beast scaling does a lot of heavy lifting here, while rage generation and weapon damage transfer push the damage into endgame territory. It clears well, bosses well, and doesn't fall apart when the screen gets messy. The Minion Army Witch is the safer pick. Spectres, skeletons, clerics, reavers, snipers, and hounds all do their jobs while you stay back and manage positioning. It's less flashy, sure, but it's reliable, and new players won't feel punished for every small mistake.
Wasp Witch is popular because it fixes one of the most annoying minion problems: getting stuck. Flying minions don't care about stairs, corners, rubble, or weird terrain. They just go. That makes mapping feel quick and clean, especially when splash damage starts deleting packs before you've even fully stopped moving. The build used to feel a bit fragile, but recent setups using fire resistance tools and shrine-style sceptres have helped a lot. Tame Beast Infernal Legion is slower, but it's wonderfully simple. You bring a huge elephant into the fight, stack minion life, apply slows or curses, and let the burning aura do its work. It's not the fastest farmer, but it's calm, tanky, and very forgiving when content gets rough.
The Wolf Minion Build is for players who don't want to stand behind the army all day. You're in the fight with the pack, freezing targets, marking enemies, building rage, and timing burst windows. It has more buttons and more risk, but it also feels far more personal. When everything lines up, bosses melt quickly. Acolyte of Chayula takes a different route. It's one of the smoother leveling choices, especially for players who'd normally struggle through early Monk progression. Physical wind skills and Hollow Palm can carry the campaign, then the Chayula tools add sustain, remnants, crowd control, and extra damage later. It's a nice bridge between active combat and minion support, without feeling too strange to learn.
Pick based on how you actually like to play, not just what sits at the top of a tier list. If you want comfort, Minion Army Witch and Acolyte of Chayula are easy to recommend. If you want the strongest all-round endgame package, Zookeeper Spirit Walker is hard to beat. Wasp Witch is the mapper's choice, especially if you hate slow minion movement. Infernal Legion suits players who enjoy a relaxed, bulky setup. Wolf builds are best when you want action and don't mind learning the rhythm. As your character grows, better weapons, spirit gear, jewels, and POE 2 Items for sale can help push these summoners past awkward breakpoints and into proper endgame farming.
