I have used some cheap fountains previously that were too loud or watered my wooden side table. I recently upgraded to a premium Tabletop Fountain from abodelook, and the quality difference is night and day. It has an immensely smooth ceramic construction and the pump is literally silent only to hear the water run. This particular one is excellently engineered in case you have been on the fence about getting one based on the factor of mess. Most certainly a worthwhile investment in terms of aesthetic.
