That was my first MMO, and while I was aware of other games in the genre, my loyalty to Runescape was absolute-at least until I drifted into single-player games and left MMOs behind.

Fast forward to 2025, and here I am back in an MMO, but not Runescape Classic. This time it's World of Warcraft, drawn in not by nostalgia, but by my partner's enthusiasm. When gamers meet, there's always a period of showing each other their favorite series. He's picked up some knowledge of Persona from me, and I've let him enjoy Death Stranding 2 first, since he's a devoted Kojima fan. In the meantime, I've been tagging along on his adventures in World of Warcraft.

Starting World of Warcraft in 2025 feels like jumping straight into the deep end. My partner and his friends had maintained a love for WoW long past childhood, and I had always been curious but intimidated. I'm beginning to skin and leatherwork, and even using emotes without accidentally sending love gestures to NPCs instead of him.

Despite my progress, I'm not yet ready to venture solo. My partner has encouraged me to lead some expeditions so I can gain confidence, but with over 20 years of lore and expansions behind the game, I know I'd miss important elements without his help. He's even suggesting we make new Alliance characters so I can see different parts of the world, but I feel like there's still so much of the Horde side I haven't explored.

Having him by my side makes World of Warcraft playable. I imagine attempting it alone would be overwhelming, confusing, and frustrating. Right now, I'm content clinging to his experience as a safety net.
